Police in North York region of Toronto shoot man dead

Police shooting

The shooting took place in front of a home on Bayview Ave. south of Steeles Ave. and police arrived in numbers shortly after 10 p.m.

Police said in a statement Saturday morning that there was a “confrontation” between the officers and a 30-year-old man and the man was shot; no officers were shot in the incident.

Toronto Police Services have not said why the officers fired on the man nor when more information would be released. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit, called in to investigate all officer-related shootings, has taken over the investigation.

SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro told media the officers “became involved” with the man. “There was a confrontation and several officers discharged their firearms,” Gennaro told media.

“The SIU has designated three primary officers and nine witness officers as part of this investigation,” he added.

The man was rushed to the trauma center at Sunnybrook hospital where he was pronounced dead. Gennaro asked any members of the public who may have witnessed the shooting to contact police at 1-800-787-8529.

During the initial phases of their investigation, police closed off that area of Bayview Ave. but it has since re-opened for traffic. The name of the deceased man has not yet been released.
