It was a miserable place after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising early in October 1944. Heavy fighting in the area of the Old Town contributed much to its destruction. The total decline came after the Nazists had destroyed it to the total degree of 90%. When Warsaw was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945, there was not a soul living there and the Old City, a place of its historical meaning, was literally a ghost town. It was decided to be recreated based on old drawings, sketches and pre-war photography. The effort took years to bring the place to its final shape and functionality.
