The green piece of land was left intact after the farmland went out of operation for almost hundred years ago and was developed as perfect recreation spot in the middle of fast growing residential area. It serves many people living in Tri-Cities region of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody east of Vancouver.

Colony Farm has unique flora and fauna that at the beginning of spring can be observed while walking around. It includes several wildlife habitat areas which are home to fauna including birds, mammals and reptiles as well as native flora.

Colony Farm underwent the Tidal Flow Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project at the end of 2011, planned for the Wilson Farm portion of the park, was designed to restore tidal flows, enhance ecosystem productivity, and create fish access from the Coquitlam River.
