They seemed not to be using any detergent, just water as it was and were drying the laundry directly on the rocks. The whole scenery not only looked like out of this world where using washing machines and dryers is everyday practice in our households but also like a big social meeting of members from local community of Lençóis.

How many days do we celebrate Earth Day in our countries?, once a year. Right? Then every weekend in Lençóis is like the Earth Day running two days in a row. No washing soap, no other detergents, no softeners, not even pieces of perfumed something that, when applied to your laundry, gives it specific smell. This is all taken care of by hot air, warm and wide river bedrock and clean water running from under the rocks located at elevated ground of Chapada Diamantina.

I have noticed whole families not only doing the laundry but also kids playing with their fathers up streams when dipping in running waters while mothers were doing the laundry. After all is done, male strength is necessary to carry all items back home. Not too far, Lençóis is some 10-15 minutes walk from this natural laundry spot.

It’s very surprising to see these people doing that with no special big pre-planned community “action” that they may announce before, get together outside the small city and call it celebration of the Earth Day.
Such a celebration has been a significant part of their life for some two centuries. It seems that it will stay in this way for some years to come. Brazilians like getting together and the event like this always brings some refreshing news to the community.
