Op-Ed: Bomb cyclones — The new face of global weather?

If you check out Null School.net their global map shows a roaring mix of wind patterns. On their global map, left click and hold to rotate the map of the Earth and explore the wind systems being created. It’s a fitting end to the hottest year ever recorded. The “bomb cyclone” is being caused by much higher than average Arctic temperatures. Cyclones form at a certain sea temperature, and the world’s new cyclone zone is delivering in spades. Weather buffs say this massive spike in temperatures and unprecedented drop in pressure has never been seen before.
This new weather pattern is likely to be as much fun as the big freezes of recent years, with torrential rain and gale force winds causing serious damage, billions of pounds’ worth in the UK alone. Better still, it’s going to link up with two other low pressure systems. Insurers, head to the lifeboats.
The huge temperature spike in a polar region poses a few imponderables for meteorologists — this sort of event isn’t well understood, and cyclones are famous for reforming and playing strange tricks. In Australia, we had a cyclone which literally skated from east to west, across the top of the continent, doing a lot of damage in the process.
What a big Arctic cyclone system is capable of doing, nobody’s too sure, but we’re apparently in the process of finding out. Those who remember the unseasonably warm winter in Toronto a few years back and the stubborn ice formations on the Great Lakes of the years following which didn’t actually melt until summer will be familiar with this weird range of possible phenomena.
Note also that figure of 20 degrees temperature: 50 degrees is cited by some experts. When you bear in mind the triumphal blasts from Paris regarding a 2 degree global rise, it creates some perspective. The poles are the world’s climate drivers, and the custodians of the increasingly erratic jet streams. Nobody’s too sure if this is the top gear for the polar climate systems, but imagine if it’s not.
The idea of bomb cyclones was developed when meteorologists first explored the theory of cyclogenesis, the formation of cyclones, and tried to find a working description of very unusual maritime storms in the 1940s and 50s. Those storms were nothing like this one, in terms of size. They didn’t occur on land, and were miniature versions which basically predicted the big “bomb” now happening.
Meanwhile — put the realities of these very real, more or less continuous major climate events in context with global warming denial theory. I find it impossible to put in to words how obscene this totally avoidable situation really is, and I can abuse people in seven languages. No obscenity, however obscene or sincerely expressed, could possibly cover this subject.
To put this in a historical context — for most of its history, Earth would have been either virtually or actually uninhabitable by humans, as a direct result of a mix of environmental factors. If it’s back to business as usual for the environment, the prognosis for humanity isn’t looking good.
Now all someone has to do is:
*Clean up the messes regularly happening around the planet.
*Bury the bodies.
*Pay for the repairs.
*Pay for infrastructure to manage drainage.
*Find more excuses for doing so very little, so very badly, and so very late.
*Hope to whatever deity they believe in that this isn’t going to get as bad as it looks.
Thanks anyway, nutcases. So glad you took the time out from screwing up the planet to add the related verbiage and chronic inactivity. Where would we be without you? Let’s find out.
