Oops! Man looking for drug dealer calls Alberta Mountie instead

“I told them they had the wrong number and hung up,” said Spaans, who is a corporal at the Boyle RCMP detachment, The Edmonton Journal reports. According to the Journal, numerous people were calling, while other sites reported it was just one person.

At any rate, Spaan was bombarded with calls and texts from one or more would-be drug buyers.

“I have a feeling they thought I was playing difficult, kind of playing hard to get,” he said. “And they just kept asking.”

So Spaans turned the tables and asked who the caller was looking for.

That’s when the caller gave him the name of a person of interest as part of an ongoing drug investigation being conducted by the RCMP into street-level drug trafficking, CTV News reports.

The errant phone call provided police with the opportunity to obtain a search warrant on an apartment in Athabasca, Alta., whereupon illegal drugs were discovered by police, The Times-Colonist reports.

“Police work doesn’t get much easier than this,” said Sgt. Kevin McGillivray, a commander of the Boyle RCMP.

On Friday, Athabasca resident Trevor Dennis, 41, was charged with alleged possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cocaine.

He was released on bail and will appear in provincial court on Dec. 14.
