The remains of the teenager show died almost a millennium ago at Collooney, CO Sligo, and he suffered a violent death. He had multiple stab wounds to the chest and his hand, which may have been a result of him trying to fight off his attacker.
The National Monuments Service had the Silgo-Leitrim archaeological consultancy Archaeological Services retrieve the remains.
The man had been given a formal Christian burial.
Photos of the tree show the upper part of the body entangled in the roots of the tree and raised up into the air. The low leg bones were inside the grave. The remains will be analyzed in more detail.
This isn’t the first time humans remains have been found in the area. About two weeks ago, bones of a stone age child were found in Sligo. Archaeologists also found the remains of an adult, and both remains were in a tiny cave on Knocknarea mountain.
The remains of the child and adult were around 5,550 years old. This means that the two are among the earliest human bones that have ever been found in the country.
The gender of the two was not established, but the child was four to six years old, and the adult was between 30 and 39 years old.
