Ohio kidnapper Ariel Castro commits suicide in prison cell

Castro was found hanging in his cell Tuesday night at around 9:20 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors performed CPR but was pronounced dead hours later.

He was 53.

As some media reports suggest, Castro was on suicide watch, with checks every 30 minutes, but he still managed to hang himself.

Castro kidnapped three Ohio girls and held them captive for over a decade. He was arrested in July thanks to an infamous 911 call by neighbor Charles Ramsey. Castro was sentenced August 1 to life in prison, plus 1,000 years kidnap and sexual assault.

Earlier, Digital Journal reported Castro had been “calm and cooperative” since being moved to a new temporary prison. He also said the sex that he had with his three captives for over a decade was, in fact, consensual sex.
