The mother, lulia Benea, 19, was arrested after she arrived in England from her home in Spain. Luis Soto, 25, and Cristina Marquez, 26, were also held.
Police in Spain believe the mother may have sold her six-week-old child for up to $17,000. Detectives also said she originally said that her baby died at a UK hospital while receiving an emergency operation.
Spanish police contacted officers in England after they became suspicious over the birth of the child, as well as the mother’s claims that he died. However, her son, who was born in September, was eventually found alive, but living in Cardiff Bay.
The mother, as well as the couple, were granted bail while the investigation continues. Authorities will be carrying out a DNA test to establish the paternity of the child. It’s not clear if all three adults traveled from Spain together or if the couple were in Cardiff waiting for the mother of the child to arrive.
As of now, the child remains in the care of local authorities. A spokesman for the South Wales police said that they confirmed that three people were arrested in connection with an investigation into concerns for a child in Cardiff.
