Mom yells during custody trial that she killed 2 of her kids

Mitchelle Blair is charged with murder after the bodies of two of her children, nine-year-old Stephen and 13-year-old Stoni, were discovered in the family’s home in March when police came to serve her with an eviction notice.

The discovery of the bodies of the two allegedly murdered children and the subsequent arrest of Mitchelle Blair was covered in a story in Digital Journal, March 26, 2015.

At a custody trial Thursday, to settle the parental rights for her two remaining children, an eight-year-old son and daughter, age 17, the court was shown a videotape of the eight-year-old telling a social worker he saw his brother killed. Blair yelled out he “didn’t see me kill Stephen, ’cause it was unintentional.”

On a separate occasion the same day, Blair again yelled, “Everybody wants to know. Yes, I did kill her,” referring to the 13-year-old, Stoni.

The Thursday trial in Wayne County Court will determine if Blair loses custody of her two surviving children. The state wants to end the parental rights of the children’s fathers. Both fathers have rarely seen the children, and also owe thousands of dollars in child support.

On March 26, Blair was arraigned in Detroit’s 36th District Court and charged with four counts of first-degree child abuse, a 15-year felony; and one count of committing child abuse first-degree in the presence of another child, a felony punishable by up to life in prison. In April, additional charges of two counts each of felony murder, and premeditated murder and torture in the deaths of the two deceased children were added.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
