LAPD media relations Sgt. Barry Montgomery told reporters police received a call at about 2 a.m. about a burglary taking place in the residence of Stroumboulopoulos in West Hollywood. Upon arrival they found a man dead of apparent head trauma.
The dead man has been identified as 41-year-old Canadian actor Richard Hong.
The police said they are looking for a black male with a slim build and about 5’8″ tall; he wore black pants and a black shirt. On a flight back to L.A. from New York, Stroumboulopoulos wrote on Facebook about the tragedy:
Many of you have seen the reports of a homicide which occurred early this morning in the home I rent in Los Angeles. I only have a few details but it seems like it was the result of a break in. The victim was a dear friend of mine, who was staying at my place while I was away. I am heartbroken.
I am writing this from a plane en route to Los Angeles from New York, so I can be with my friends there, who are also devastated.
There’s so much to say but I’m at a loss for words so just love your people and I will have more to say when we know more about what happened.
The 44-year-old Stroumboulopoulos is a former VJ on MuchMusic and from 2005-2014 had his own evening talk show, George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight on the CBC.
More recently he was the anchor on Hockey Night in Canada and on the NHL on Rogers.
