Man attempts to smuggle 59 heroin wraps and phones up his butt

Anthony McCarten, 49, tried to smuggle heroin, cannabis and six mobile phones into a prison up his butt. He told police he stole two TVs from a store because he knew he would be arrested and taken into custody.

However, when he was searched by security guards, they got a whiff of cannabis. Packages also started to fall out of his shorts.

The prosecutor, Robert Jones, said during the interview McCarten insisted the drugs were for his personal use. Liverpool Crown Court heard about how McCarten went to the police station on St Anne Street on July 8 and admitted to stealing the TVs.

Jones said at the time, which happened on July 8, McCarten wasn’t linked to the crime, but he was arrested. It was then he was interviewed and decided to admit to the thefts.

McCarten told police he was addicted to heroin and he wanted to sell the televisions to a woman. He said the woman paid him in the packages because she didn’t have cash. He ended up being jailed for six weeks for the theft

Justice William Davis questioned McCarten’s claim that the woman didn’t have money but happened to have a bunch of heroin she was willing to give him in exchange for the televisions. McCarten’s attorney said maybe the woman thought she could make more money from the two TVs than she could from the drugs. He added that he was at a loss trying to explain the whole thing.

Justice Davis ended up sentencing McCarten to four years in jail. He said heroin in prison was a huge problem, both in terms of how it effects people and the effects of discipline in the prison. He described it as being hard currency.

Davis added that McCarten had six phones, which were in a seven-inch package, which are also considered hard currency in jail.

This isn’t something unheard of. A few months ago, a man was arrested and authorities found out he had 100 capsules of heroin in his butt.
