Barack Obama was elected president on Nov. 4, 2008, becoming the first African-American to reach the highest office in the land, an unlikely candidate fulfilling a once-impossible dream. During the 2008 campaign, Obama inspired hope in millions of Americans and people around the world, while his critics said he was all fluff and no substance.
A year-plus since the election, hope and inspiration has given way to the daily grind of governance, with fans and detractors arguing on whether Obama is turning the U.S. around from its blue-red divide, the recent recession, and its foreign policy controversies. Many hard choices face Obama, but has he done what he promised Americans?
