Cat attacks dogs
The rather rare occurrence happened in Victoria, B.C. on Monday evening, August 14. A woman, Kyla Grover, was taking 7 dogs, pit bulls and pit bull crosses, on a leashed walk (the dogs and their owners are part of a group called ‘Pit Bulls of Victoria, B.C.’) when a cat fell upon them.
Kyla and the dogs were near the Thompson residence when one dog decided to say hi to Betty Jean Thompson, 78, who was gardening in her yard. The Thompson cat, Baby, was lying next to Betty Jean. Betty Jean said she warned Kyla a cat was there and Kyla pulled back on a leash that had three dogs on it, including the one that wanted to say hi. That dog kept moving forward and into the yard.
Mistake.
Baby, who is 16, sprung into action and began attacking dogs, jumping up on noses, snarling, scratching legs, moving from one dog to another. One pit bull was so badly hurt he had to be taken to a vet.
“The dogs were walking by, completely minding their own business,” Kyla told the Vancouver Province, noting that none of the dogs even fought back. “The cat just goes at all of the dogs, not backing down.
“The cat is swiping at them and latched onto one of the dog’s faces,” she added. “I got bit and scratched in the process of trying to separate them. I spent the whole night at emergency because cat bites are nasty.”
Vet bill paid
Some might suggest the cat, seeing so many dogs, some entering her territory/yard and approaching her owner, may have been justified. But Betty Jean and husband, Del, paid the vet bill of the injured dog ($222).
“She’s a watchdog and doesn’t know it,” Del said of Baby. “Cats and dogs don’t get along too well sometimes.”
Statistics show pit bulls to be potentially dangerous animals, much more so than other breeds. In the U.S. they account for 59 percent of all dog attacks and many cat, dog and human deaths. Dogsbite.org claims that between 2005 and 2015, 238 Americans were mauled to death by pit bulls, or one human every 17 days.
Over that same period there were no humans mauled to death by cats…but all the same you might be advised to steer clear of Victoria’s Baby Thompson.
