Gordon weakens, Hurricane Florence is now a Category 4 storm

While Gordon has been downgraded to a tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns there is still the threat of heavy rains and flooding associated with the system. At 4:00 p.m. the center of Gordon was located about 45 miles (75 kilometers) northwest of Jackson, Mississippi.

Gordon is moving to the northwest at a leisurely 9.0 mph (15 kph) with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (45 kph). The system’s minimum central pressure is 1012 MB or 29.89 inches. Gordon will eventually merge with a front across the Midwest and become extratropical.

Gordon is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches over the western Florida Panhandle, southwest Alabama,
central Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, southern Iowa, and Illinois. There could be isolated rainfall of as much as 12 inches in some parts of the forecast area through Saturday.

Hurricane Florence continues its trek to the northwest
As of 5:00 p.m. EDT, Florence had become a small but very powerful Category 4 hurricane over the open waters of the south-central North Atlantic Ocean. Florence will remain a hurricane through the week but is expected to weaken somewhat by tomorrow and Friday.

At the last update, Florence was 1,110 miles (1,790 kilometers east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands and about 1,295 miles (2,080 kilometers) east-southeast of Bermuda. Florence has maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph) and is tracking to the northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

The minimum central pressure is 953 MB or 28.15 inches. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 kilometers) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 kilometers).

Beyond Friday, Florence will move into an area of more favorable conditions for strengthening and the tropical cyclone should intensify more this weekend, as it moves on a more northwesterly course. It is too early to set a track for Florence into next week. Florence could track toward Bermuda, or track west toward the East Coast of the United States next week.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
