French lawmakers approve extension of CAR military operation

-

French lawmakers on Tuesday approved an extension of the country's military operation in the Central African Republic beyond four months.

Despite misgivings among some that French troops have been put into an uncontrollable situation in the former colony, deputies in the National Assembly voted 428-14 (with 21 abstentions) in favour of authorising the extension of a mission which was launched in early December in response to fears of a sectarian bloodbath.

The upper house Senate was expected to complete parliamentary approval of the extension later Tuesday in line with France's rules governing military action.
