Former Democrats and Republicans form a new political party

Citing the majority of Americans’ discontent over our two-party political system, a new party called Forward was founded.

The new party will initially be co-chaired by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and Christine Todd Whitman, the former Republican governor of New Jersey.

The founding members of the new party told Reuters they hope the party will become a viable alternative to the Republican and Democratic parties that dominate U.S. politics.

Forward has plans for a series of events to be rolled out this autumn in two dozen cities with the aim of rolling out its platform and attracting support, according to The Guardian.

The official launch of the party will occur on September 24, in Houston, Texas, and the party’s first national convention in a major US city next summer is to be announced.

A merger of three political groups

Forward is actually the result of a merger of three political groups that have emerged in recent years due to political upheaval and an increasingly polarized political system. The leaders cited a Gallup poll last year showing a record two-thirds of Americans believe a third party is needed.

The first group, called Renew America Movement, was formed in 2021 by dozens of former officials in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, George W Bush, and Donald Trump.

The second group called the Forward party was founded by Yang, who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 but left the party in 2021 and became an independent.

The third group is called the Serve America Movement. It is a group of Democrats, Republicans, and independents founded by former Republican congressman David Jolly.

Right now, the Forward party has two pillars that include – “reinvigorate a fair, flourishing economy” and “give Americans more choices in elections, more confidence in a government that works, and more say in our future.”

The party, which is centrist, has no specific policies yet. It will say at its Thursday launch: “How will we solve the big issues facing America? Not Left. Not Right. Forward.”

For those who may be wondering what a centrist is, the best definition is this – “a person who agrees with some of right-wing and left-wing ideologies – completely agreeing with neither of the ideologies. They aren’t exactly the “middle ground,” but a combination of both.

Political analysts are still up in the air over the new party’s chances of becoming a viable “third party.” Most third parties – and we have had quite a number of them, never came to fruition.

Stu Rothenberg, a veteran non-partisan political analyst, said it was easy to talk about establishing a third party but almost impossible to do so. “The two major political parties start out with huge advantages, including 50 state parties built over decades,” he said.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
