Five Tanzanian gold miners have been rescued after spending 41 days trapped some 100 metres (300 feet) underground after the shaft they were working in collapsed, the mining ministry said Tuesday.

"The miners were very weak," Minister of Energy and Mines spokeswoman Badra Masoud said, adding they were being treated in hospital.
