FacePalm Friday: Drunk man dials police to help him start his car

This is my weekly column FacePalm Friday, where I take a look at offbeat news. You can go and read last week’s column here.

The man, Andrew Scuglia, 27 of Richmond Hill, Ont., is now facing charges of impaired driving. He was arrested after officers arrived at the scene and discovered he was intoxicated. He was taken to the police station where he took a breath test and he blew over the legal limit of alcohol.

The person who took the call could hear the vehicle’s engine revving up in the background because Scuglia was trying to get his car moving.

When officers arrived, they found the car running and the lights and windshield wipers were on, but Scuglia couldn’t figure out how to drive it.

Impaired care or control is a criminal offence and a person can be charged with it if they are impaired by drugs or alcohol and attempts to operate a vehicle. The vehicles doesn’t have to be moving to be subjected to the offence.

The York Regional Police encourages people to dial 9-1-1 if they believe a motorist is impaired by drugs or alcohol, especially during the festive season.
