FacePalm Friday: Couple get engaged at Walmart, then shoplift

This is my weekly column FacePalm Friday, where I take a look at offbeat news. You can go and read last week’s column here.

Authorities say William J. Cornelius Jr., 25, bought an engagement ring from a Walmart in Bay City at the end of December. Cornelius got permission from employees to use the loudspeaker to propose to Sheri Moore, 20.

Security footage shows shoppers applauding as they watch Cornelius get on one knee to propose to Moore, who accepted his proposal.

However, that’s not the only thing cameras recorded. Moore was caught on camera stealing some earrings and a necklace. She was seen putting the items in her purse, and then the couple left the store without paying for the items.

After the couple left the Walmart, they went to a Spencer’s Gift store, where the couple stole more than $70 worth of items, including thong underwear, edible underwear and a sex toy.

Officers found Moore walking inside a mall with an employee from Spencer’s in pursuit. Cornelius was found at the mall’s food court, where he ended up going to sleep while he was tying his shoes.

Cornelius told authorities his actions was the result of taking Tramadol, a painkiller he was given during a recent trip to the hospital.

Authorities arrested Cornelius and charged him with retail fraud. Moore was arrested and charged with larceny, but she said she was not involved with the thefts.
