At 11 p.m. on Thursday night, Daron Dylon Wint, 34, was arrested in northeastern DC after his DNA was found on a Domino’s pizza crust left at the torched mansion after he ordered pizza the same day of the murders. Police suspect the family was most likely held hostage in their own home before three out of four of them were stabbed to death and their home set ablaze by Wint. USA Today reports they were likely held captive for about 10 hours, with the captors forcing the family to give them $40,000 in cash, delivered to the house by an assistant.
Wint was a former employee of Savras Savopoulos, 46, who was CEO of American Iron Works based in Hyattsville, MD and owner of the mansion . After fleeing to Brooklyn to stay with a friend after the murders, Wint was on his way back to the DC area after hearing he was a wanted man, as reported by the New York Post. This is when police located Wint, riding in a Chevy Cruze, driving along with a moving truck where a large sum of cash was found. Reportedly, Wint submitted right away with no fight. Police suspect this arson/murder involves other suspects, but no other arrests have been made as of yet.
Mashable reports that Wint has quite the criminal record, dating back to the early 2000s after he moved to the U.S. from Guyana. Wint’s crimes include assault, breaking and entering, numerous death threats, and vandalism. He even brought a BB gun and machete to his workplace at American Iron Works back in 2010. Wint is expected in DC Superior Court on Friday, May 22nd, and has currently been charged with 1st degree murder.
The Savopoulos family also had two teenage daughters who were away at boarding camp during the murder. Funeral services for the family are scheduled for Monday, May 25.
