Spring starts with snow in Edmonton (Includes first-hand account)

If we stick with the comparisons of spring coming in like a lion or lamb, it has definitely come in this year like a lion. On Solstice, the first day of spring, we had a big snow storm. This is not unusual in Edmonton. There is usually a big dump in late March. Fortunately, the white stuff does not stay on the ground very long.

I am writing this on April 1, also known as April Fool’s Day, and we’re in the midst of a bit of a spring blizzard. Yesterday was sunny and warm. I was walking around in a hoodie and t-shirt. Today, I need a sweater and heavier coat. Tomorrow? Who knows. My closet is filled with every kind of outer layer imaginable, and I am willing to bet I will be wearing a little bit of everything until maybe July. Which, incidentally, is the only month of the year where snow has never fallen in Edmonton. Yes, I have seen snow fall in August. It was surreal.

Spring is when things start to turn green and grow. And that is happening here, I promise. I have seen buds on the trees and a few fresh blades of grass popping up. I may have to look under a few snowflakes in order to see them, but they are there. And, eventually, the fresh foliage will take over.

Such is the nature of spring in Edmonton. If you want an accurate weather report, just look out the window. And if you don’t like the weather, go inside for ten minutes and wait for it to change. Most of these photos were taken late last week on a relatively mild, sunny day. Then, there is a glimpse of what is going on outside of my window at home today.
