He called them “rapists” and held them responsible for the drug problem and high crime rate in the US.
Televisa in association with former Miss Universe, Lupita Jones, organize a pageant to select Mexico’s contestant for the Miss Universe pageant. Televisa said, “For Televisa, any commercial relationship with the Miss Universe pageant and with the companies of the Trump organization is unacceptable.”
A Televisa spokesperson confirmed that that no Mexican candidate will take part in the Miss Universe pageant.
NBC said that the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants are a joint venture between Trump and the TV network. NBC has decided to dismiss the airing of the pageant following Trump’s derogatory remarks.
Ora TV, owned by Carlos Slim, a Mexican billionaire, has also decided to call off a project with Trump. Univision, the American Spanish-language broadcaster, has also dismissed airing the Miss Universe contest.
Trump called NBC “foolish” and “weak.” He also said NBC does not understand the serious threat illegal immigrants pose to the US.
Earlier this month, when Trump launched his presidential bid, he attacked Mexico for sending people with “lots of problems” to the US.
Trump holds the Mexican government responsible for compelling Univision to sever ties. The five-year deal between Univision and the Miss Universe pageant is worth more than $13 million.
Trump tweeted, “Mexican gov doesn’t want me talking about terrible border situation & horrible trade deals.” He also said on the social media website that the Mexican Govt. was using Univision as a pawn to prevent Trump from talking about all this.
Trump continued to attack Mexico in an interview aired on CNN on Sunday. A petition signed by over 200,000 people has called for NBC to ditch Trump.
Trump is seeking the Republican party’s nomination for this year’s presidential elections. NBC’s ditching of Trump can get awkward for the White House aspirant as NBC is due to air a key Republican presidential debate this Feb 26.
