Connecticut man arrested after Twitter threat to bomb Trump rally

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held two rallies in Connecticut Saturday. The rallies were held in Bridgeport and Waterbury. At 12:46 p.m. Saturday, the United States Secret Service contacted the Connecticut State Police and the state’s counter-terrorism officials about a possible threat to bomb the rally to be held in Waterbury.

In a press release issued by the Connecticut State Police, a tweet was sent out saying, “Is somebody going to bomb the trump rally or am I going to have to?”

A second tweet was sent out warning a friend his family should leave the event so they will not be harmed.

Officials were able to pinpoint the area of Waterbury where the tweet originated and were able to determine it came from the account of Sean Morkys who lived in the area. Officers from the state police, Waterbury police, and secret service agents descended on Morkys’ home Saturday afternoon and interviewed him. Around 5 p.m. the 20-year-old was charged with one count of first-degree threatening, inciting injury to a person or property, and one count of second-degree breach of the peace.

After interviewing Morkys, the Secret Service was satisfied he did not pose an immediate threat to Trump or any members of the public.

The rally went ahead without incident. During his speech, Trump told the crowd of approximately 3,000 he was not “toning it down” and said “Isn’t it wonderful, I’m not one of these teleprompter guys?”

Law Newz reports Morkys’ arrest seems to show the Secret Service are closely monitoring social media for threats surrounding Trump events.

Morkys was later released on $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on May 4.
