Carlsberg enters Czech Republic with Zatec acquisition

-

Danish brewer Carlsberg said on Thursday it had acquired Czech producer Zatec, a transaction which will allow it to set foot in the world's first beer market per capita.

Carlsberg did not specify the sum it payed to take over the company, called Zatecky Pivovar, with 51 percent of its shares.

The brewery, built in 1801 inside the walls of the Zatec castle, can produce up to 200,000 hectolitres per year and follows an ancient tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages.

"Premium Czech beer represents a growing segment across key markets in Europe, and following the acquisition Carlsberg will be able to roll out the brewery's main brand, Zatec, in selected markets," Carlsberg said in a statement.

Other beers by Zatecky Pivovar include Baronka and gluten-free Celia.

According to Japanese brewer Kirin's research institute, Czechs are the world's biggest beer drinkers with 148.6 litres per capita every year, far ahead of Austrians (107.8 litres) and Germans (106.1 litres).
