Surpassing other popular airports in Mexico, Cancun Airport increased by 18.9% the number of international tourists landed in June 2021 compared to the previous month and remains the leader in terms of international tourism, representing 44% of the total of international travelers landing in Mexico.
These numbers give an optimistic perspective about the travel sector recovery in the Mexican Caribbean and economic reactivation of Quintana Roo State, which, up to date, it is estimated to have reached 83% thanks to the 2.5 million passengers landing in Cancun one year after touristic activities resumption, representing an increase of 26% compared to the same period of 2020. Estimates point to the arrival of another 6 million passengers by the end of December 2021.
In terms of Canadian tourism, it is estimated, from September to December of the current year, at least 81 thousand occupied seats in flights with Cancun as a destination, surpassing the total (18,809) of Canadians who traveled to Mexico from January to May given the absolute flights’ suspension, after a 59% fall between 2019 and 2020.
It is also estimated a 30% increase of seats occupied from the United States and 6.8% from other cities of Mexico.
In his Twitter account, Miguel Torruco, Tourism Secretary of Mexico, posted the numbers via infographics which also explain that the main origin of travelers coming to Mexico is United States, with more than 4 million tourists traveling to Mexico by the end of June 2021, representing a 76% increase compared to 2020.
Travelers from both United States and Canada are also main users of Cancun Airport Transportation services, whose operation is estimated to increase by, at least, 35% during the September-December period.
Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotels Association made public its more recent report from July 29 where the accumulated hostelry occupancy rate was 67.2%.
Everything points to predictions becoming true. On August 1st, Cancun Airport registered 500 operations: 251 arrivals, 94 nationals, and 157 internationals; and 249 departures, 98 nationals, and 151 internationals.
