Cedrick Bourgault-Morin, 21, allegedly tried to smuggle in 182 pounds of Xanax, an anti-anxiety prescription, across the US border, and his chosen method was a sled.
On Thursday, the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced that Bourgault-Morin, of Quebec, had been charged with possessing with intent to distribute the drug.
According to the criminal complaint, last Wednesday around 1 a.m., authorities at the Swanton Sector Communications Center of U.S. Customs and Border Protection were alerted about activity along the railroad tracks that lead from Canada and into North Troy, a small town in Vermont.
When border patrol agents found Bourgault-Morin, he was wearing white camouflage and had a bag on the sled. Inside the bag contained hundreds of vacuum-sealed bags with Xanax pills. Agents said the pills had a street value of more than $1 million.
As of now, there are no details on where he was bringing the drugs, but Bourgault-Morin may have had co-conspirators on both the Canadian side of the border and the American side of the border.
Bourgault-Morin remains in jail and will appear in court at a future date. The motion stated that he has no connections in Vermont and if he was set free, then he would flee.
If convicted, Bourgault-Morin could be sent to prison for five years, as well as slapped with a $250,000 fine.
