California college pitcher shot and killed playing Pokemon Go

Calvin Riley, 20, of San Mateo, a pitcher for the Delta College Mustangs of Stockton, was found shot to death Saturday around 10 p.m. in the 900 block of North Point Street.

Riley was set to begin his second year as the team’s top relief pitcher, according to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

Responding paramedics located Riley, who had been shot in the chest, and performed CPR, but were unable to revive him and he was declared dead at the scene, the newspaper said.

San Francisco police are investigating.

They said Riley had been with a group playing the online game Pokemon Go using smartphones when he was shot.

Riley’s college baseball coach, Reed Peters, said the young pitcher was a “hard worker, great teammate and unbelievable person.”

Riley was a 2015 graduate of Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, just south of San Francisco.

“He was the guy you wanted to have the ball in his hand when it meant the most,” Peters said. “He was a tough kid — a battler — it’s shocking that something like this would happen to him. It’s terrible.”

As a high school senior, Riley played in 28 games in which he had 25 hits, 17 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Riley’s San Joaquin Delta College teammates also expressed shock and sadness at the news, the newspaper said.

“He was someone we always strive to be like and he was such a nice kid,” said teammate Joey Skracic, also 20, who said he worked out with Riley all last season.

“It’s hard for us to grasp that he’s not going to be there when we all come back in two weeks,” Skracic said.“We’re just dumbfounded,” Skracic said. “It’s just really hard right now. We really loved him.”
