Shaneka Monique Torres, 30, now faces at least two years in prison for felony use of a firearm. She also faces an additional five years in prison for shooting at an occupied building and illegally carrying a concealed weapon, MLive reports.
The jury, which was half men and half women, reached the verdict Wednesday, March 25, after the two-day trial in the Kent County Circuit Court.
The bacon boondoggle began on Feb. 10, 2014 when Torres, 30, ordered a bacon cheeseburger at the McDonald’s, but it arrived without bacon. After complaining to a manager, she was offered a free burger, Time.com reports.
So she and a friend showed up again, around 3:00 a.m. and she ordered another bacon cheeseburger, which also arrived sans bacon. Torres lashed out verbally at an employee before allegedly pulling out her handgun and firing a shot into the restaurant. No one was hurt.
The bullet shattered the side window on the driver’s side of the Chevy Tahoe before zipping through the restaurant, 10 News reports.
She was arrested at her home about 30 minutes later, Time.com reports.
The case drew international attention because it was so bizarre. John Beason, the defense attorney, said the shooting was accidental and didn’t have anything to do with her burger arriving without bacon. This contradicted what witnesses said, per 10 News.
Torres is being sentenced on April 21, which happens to be the same day that she also has to appear in Grand Rapids District Court to explain her reason for missing a work crew assignment that’s tied to her conviction of driving on a suspended or revoked license.
