As the saying goes, “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” A woman in Austria has now learned the error of her ways after she decided she preferred to go hiking in the mountains rather than attending a scheduled business meeting with a colleague on Thursday afternoon. She made up a huge lie to get out of it and went hiking instead.
According to Salzburger Nachrichten (German language), the unnamed woman sent a text message to her colleague explaining that she couldn’t make the meeting as scheduled, as she had managed to get caught up in a tree while paragliding.
What she obviously didn’t plan on was the concern showed by her colleague, who, worrying for her safety, immediately called the local emergency services, telling them of her accident while paragliding on the Gaisberg mountain close to the city of Salzburg.
As reported by Kleine Zeitung (German language), what ensued from her concerned colleague’s call was a search and rescue team consisting of no less than 18 mountain rescuers, including several police officers and firemen.
According to the Local, while the search and rescue team were still heading to the scene, and approximately one hour after sending her initial message, the woman sent another stretch of the truth text message. In the message she explained that she had managed to scramble to safety and that all was well. She said she was heading to hospital to get checked out.
The search and rescue team were, of course, well on their way at that stage and the search mission had to be called off. This will now land the errant business woman in a whole heap of trouble, as since the police discovered that the paragliding accident was a fabrication, thoroughly wasting their time and resources, she will now face action for faking an alpine emergency.
