These included five foreigners from the Netherlands, Vietnam, Brazil, Malawi and Nigeria. The inmates were executed by firing squad some time after midnight today.
The two are placing their hopes in an 11th-hour plea to avoid having to face a firing squad, with reports suggesting a second judicial review could be submitted for the Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in the Indonesian Supreme Court within the next few days.
The filing would try to have the death sentences commuted to fixed prison terms of potentially 30 years. Meanwhile, Indonesia has announced that the two Australians will be executed together, expecting Chan will be denied presidential clemency shortly. Chan is one of a group of 20 prisoners next up for the firing squad.
The last ditch applications for clemency will be reviewed by the duo’s Melbourne-based legal team led by Julian McMahon, who represented Van Tuong Nguyen. The latter was an Australian drug smuggler who was executed in after a high-profile case in Singapore in 2005.
According to reports, both Chan and Sukumaran were full of praise for the help offered by Australia’s consul-general in Bali, Majell Hind, along with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. “Julie Bishop has been amazing . . . I think that will come more to light,” said a source close to the pair.
