Maple Syrup theft
Earlier this week an unknown number of thieves managed to break into a storage facility near Montreal’s Trudeau Airport in Dorval, that belongs to a company called Mexusan Cargo, and steal 20,000 litres of maple syrup; the maple syrup was destined for the Japanese market.
Alfredo Monaco, a vice-president at the company, said that the cargo is worth about $150,000 and they have offered a reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the company getting it back.
The pancake-loving crooks managed to break into the warehouse and nab a shipping container that contained 20 pallets of one-litre bottles of a maple syrup called Kirkland. Kirkland is the primary brand sold at Costco’s.
Company offers reward
The company is offering a $10,000 reward but there has been no reports of a response yet and police say they are working to find clues in the heist.
Police said the robbers gained entry into the yard the maple syrup was stored in sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning and they brought along a tractor. It’s believed they used the tractor to move the skids of syrup to their own truck. Monaco told media the thieves must have had a high degree of sophistication.
And despite $18 million worth of maple syrup having been stolen from another Montreal storage area in 2012, Monaco said he was surprised maple syrup would be targeted.
He called it “liquid gold.”
