White House May Soon Release bin Laden Videotape

WASHINGTON (voa) – U.S. media reports say the White House may release a videotape of Osama bin Laden as early as Wednesday.

On the tape Mr. bin Laden reportedly says he knew in advance about the September 11 terrorist attacks and tuned in by radio in advance to hear coverage of the attacks.

President Bush said tape shows bin Laden has “no conscience and no soul.” President Bush says the videotape that was recently captured in Afghanistan reminds him that Osama bin Laden is an evil murderer who wants to destroy civilization.

The White House says before it releases the tape it wants to make certain that would not compromise U.S. intelligence efforts. The White House also wants to double-check its English translation of Mr. bin Laden’s comments, which are in Arabic. The videotape is a “proof” that Osama bin Laden “was responsible for planning” the attacks.

The 40 minute videotape was said to have been found in the eastern city of Jalalabad and may have been used for recruitment purposes by bin Laden’s al-Qaida network.

Meanwhile, U.S. military officials said they had used the biggest bomb in their conventional arsenal on Sunday in an attempt to kill al-Qaida leaders — possibly including Osama bin Laden himself — believed to be holed up in a cave at Tora Bora.
