Every hour on American interstates a rig limps onto the shoulder, sometimes with little more than a faint metallic squeal as warning. Two very different nuisances share a hidden commonality: they both begin as signals too subtle or too numerous for humans to sift. Turning those whispers into clear, timely guidance is the life’s work of software engineer-inventor Nishitha Reddy Nalla.
The bigger problem nobody sees (or hears)
Brake defects show up in roughly 42 percent of large-truck crashes studied by safety researchers; when those flaws are serious enough to sideline a vehicle, the risk of a wreck triples (IIHS Crash Testing). Meanwhile, news-industry analysts warn that some smartphone owners now receive up to 50 alerts a day, pushing many to disable notifications altogether (The Guardian).
Both headaches cost time, money and, at their worst, lives. Yet they originate in raw data that conventional dashboards ignore: micro-vibrations in an engine block, or the fleeting context of what a user is doing right now.
Enter Nishitha Reddy Nalla
Working inside a major U.S. telecommunications provider’s emerging-technology lab, Nalla asked a deceptively simple question: What if we taught machines to pay attention to us? Her answer arrived in two closely intertwined patents issued in 2024.
- Predicting Hazardous Driving Conditions from Audio, a machine-learning pipeline that converts engine and road noise into an “audio signature” and flags hazards long before a human notices .
- Context-Aware Information Delivery, an algorithm that filters and times on-device content so only material matching a user’s immediate situation surfaces .
Although the use-cases seem miles apart, one lives under a truck hood, the other inside a smartphone, both inventions share the same architecture: capture an overlooked signal, translate it into features a model can understand, and deliver precisely the guidance a person needs, exactly when they need it.
“I think of it as giving everyday systems a sixth sense,” Nalla says. “The data was always there; we just never listened closely enough.”
On the road: Giving fleets a heads-up
Picture a delivery convoy barreling toward Chicago at dawn. A faint grinding sound in Axle 3 might signal brake pad wear, but the driver’s cab is noisy and the maintenance window is still days away. With Nalla’s model running on an edge device, that squeal is captured, transformed into a frequency-domain fingerprint, compared against thousands of labeled examples, and, if risk crosses a learned threshold, an alert flies to the fleet dashboard. Dispatchers reroute the truck to a nearby service bay, avoiding an hours-long breakdown and keeping other motorists safe.
Early pilots inside her organization showed three immediate wins:
- Fewer roadside incidents – dispatchers report that warnings arrive hours, sometimes days, before parts fail.
- Lower downtime bills – shifting from reactive to predictive maintenance keeps delivery schedules intact.
- Driver confidence – operators say they “trust the truck” more when silent faults are caught upstream.
Though the telecom company declines to share proprietary metrics, representatives confirm that several enterprise customers are integrating the audio-model API with existing telematics portals this year.
On our screens: From noise to relevance
Nalla’s second patent tackles a different kind of overload. Push-notification statistics show U.S. users already juggle dozens of pings per day, and half consider them annoying. Flooding drivers, or anyone, with generic blasts undercuts safety and productivity.
Her context engine addresses the problem in three steps:
- Signal capture – it samples ambient data points: GPS speed, current task in-app, even screen brightness.
- Preference profile – a lightweight model learns whether a user prefers text, quick-read cards, or rich links.
- Relevance scoring – only items that match the moment and the person’s history reach the lock-screen.
A pilot with internal field technicians reduced “non-actionable” alerts by double-digit percentages, according to team members authorized to speak in general terms. Drivers reported feeling “less nagged,” and managers noticed faster acknowledgment of the alerts that remained, an early hint that fewer, smarter pings beat more every time.
“We spend so much effort creating information,” Nalla notes. “The bigger challenge is knowing when not to speak.”
Why the two patents belong together
Both inventions convert hidden or excessive signals into concise, actionable advice. In the fleet scenario, the “signal” is sub-audible engine noise; in the phone scenario, it is the flood of competing notifications. In each case, a machine-learning model sifts the noise and surfaces the critical.

She is already experimenting with fusing the two models. Imagine a scenario where a driver’s smartwatch vibrates once, not fifty times, because the system knows the driver is off-duty and only urgent maintenance issues should surface. If her team succeeds, the next generation of fleets could run on a whisper: machines quietly negotiating with one another so humans hear only what matters.
“Good technology,” Nalla reflects, “is almost invisible. It shows up just in time, then fades back into the background.”
By training computers to listen for danger and speak only when useful, Nishitha Reddy Nalla demonstrates how the softest data can deliver the loudest impact, safer roads, calmer screens, and a world where silence finally has something important to say.
