Innovation and collaboration are at the foundation of the WeaveSphere tech conference, taking place in downtown Toronto from November 15-17, 2022.
Researchers, academics, investors, and entrepreneurs in attendance will ‘weave’ their ideas and unique perspectives together, creative connections and ultimately, big ideas.
And to help inspire and engage these ‘weavers,’ WeaveSphere has three keynote speakers on deck.
Gillian Hadfield, Chair & Director of Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology & Society, University of Toronto
Kicking off WeaveSphere, Gillian Hadfield is a researcher currently focused on innovative AI design for legal and regulatory systems, computational models of human normative systems, and working alongside machine learning researchers to build systems that understand and respond to human norms.
She is also a Faculty Member at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and a senior policy advisor at OpenAI. Her book Rules for a Flat World: Why Humans Invented Law and How to Reinvent It or a Complex Global Economy came out in 2017, and is now available as an updated paperback.
In November 2021, Hadfield gave a TEDx Talk asking a big question: How do we build trust in the age of Big Tech? Have a listen:
Earlier this year, Hadfield was also featured in a University of Toronto Magazine article about how we might need to rethink our approach to AI, titled ‘Will AI Be a Force for Good?”

A true collaborator, WeaveSphere’s Day 3 keynote speaker Marcel Mitran works with research, academia, and development teams across IBM to drive innovation through IBM Systems.
As an IBM Fellow and the CTO for Cloud Platform for zSystems and LinuxONE, Mitran is a corporate-wide technical executive leading IBM LinuxONE, Red Hat Synergy, and the hybrid cloud on zSystems. Alongside partners, vendors, and open source communities, he develops best-of-breed solutions with LinuxONE, zSystems, and IBM Cloud.
Fun fact: with over 330 patents issued worldwide, Mitran is an IBM Master Inventor.
Mitran was a recent guest on the Machine Learning podcast, talking about becoming an IBM Fellow and sustainability in technology. Check it out:
