WASHINGTON (voa) – Washington has given the U.N. Security Council a lengthy report on the global fight against terrorism.
John Negroponte, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, presented the document Wednesday in response to a September 28 Security Council resolution.
The resolution called on all 189 U.N. members to report by December 27 on their actions to prevent the financing, assistance, and sheltering of terrorists.
Steps taken by the U.S. authorities included designating 153 individuals, groups and entities as supporters of international terrorism.
Ambassador Negroponte said the United States also wants to greatly increase global cooperation so all U.N. member states can effectively counter terror threats for years to come.
The report says U.S. cooperation with the European Union on counter-terrorism has been unprecedented.
The report notes that the United States has signed and expects to ratify the U.N. Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and a similar Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings.
Ratification of the treaties must be voted by the U.S. Senate.
