NEW YORK – The Security Council has approved a U.S. sponsored resolution aimed at stopping the financing of terrorist groups. The resolution targets financial and other forms of support for terrorism.
It also contains language on the extradition of accused terrorists and exchanging intelligence information. The resolution would deny safe haven to terrorists and groups that plan, support or commit terrorist acts.
The United States introduced the draft Thursday.
The measure would be binding to all U.N. member nations and a committee would be set up to monitor the its implementation.
In the meantime Mexican President Vicente Fox has reaffirmed Mexico’s support for the United States in the fight against terrorism.
In an interview Friday on the U.S. television network CNN, President Fox said his country is working closely with U.S. officials to ensure terrorists do not cross into the United States from Mexico.
Mr. Fox said U.S. and Mexican officials have heightened security along the joint border. President Fox also said the two sides are working together to check bank accounts and financial transactions to track activity by suspected terrorists. (voa)
