The air purifier that blends in with the home: Reviewing the OneLife X

The OneLife X captures 99.99% of harmful airborne particles and protects against airborne viruses as small as 0,01 micrometer.

Air purifiers designed for home or office use can help improve the indoor air quality through the removal of airborne particles such as dust, pollen, allergens, mold, and smoke. This is traditionally due to the incorporation of a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter into a unit. A new device on the market uses something more advanced: a plasma field to capture and to eliminate pollutants.

For people affected by allergies, air purifier can help someone to breather breathe easier. However, there are a range of different units, and the range includes variations with operational performance.

One new device on the market is the OneLife X, which was sent to Digital Journal for evaluation. The air purifier is manufactured in Germany and the unique selling point with the device is that no filter replacements are required across the lifetime of the device (although the filter does need periodic removal and washing).

This is due to the mode of filtration, which is based on plasma technology, which is an emerging area for air purification. As particles pass through a plasma field, they are become charged and this causes the particles to be draw to particle collection sheets (which the developers liken to drawing an object towards a magnet). This renders the air passing through to be purified to the level of 99.99 percent for particles down to 0.01 micrometers.

The OneLife X air purifier comes ready assembled, and it begins to operate as soon as it is connected to the mains supply. The ease of operation is supported by the ability to operate the unit remotely via an app (which is available for both Android and iOS). The device can also be controlled through voice assistants like Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa (among others).

Operationally the OneLife X has different operating modes. With the automatic mode, the unit adjusts its fan setting speed according to the ambient air quality. This happens as a result of the OneLife X coming with a laser sensor that detects indoor pollutants in the air as well as humidity and temperature. There is also a boost function and a night-mode, which operates with a reduced fan speed.

The OneLife X unit runs quietly (at 25db), even when the boost mode is activated, and the fan is working to maximum capacity. With the fan on full, there is a cooling effect if you are located close to the unit.

In terms of appearance, the OneLife X unit is designed to fir discretely into the typical home, resembling a speaker for a good quality hi-fi system rather than an air purifier (and effect derived from the outer container which is made from sustainable bamboo).

Operating the device for a few days, the air felt noticeably cleaner (which is something of an advantage for those, like this reviewer, who live in a built-up urban area). The OneLife X therefore ticks the boxes for both functionality and style.

Currently the OneLife X is only available via Indiegogo.
