Tablet PC Redefines Mobility And Enables Pen-Based Computing

TORONTO – In a briefing to Canadian media, Microsoft Canada unveiled the Tablet PC, which is built on the pen-based technology of the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system to help extend the functionality of notebook computers.

Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is a superset of Windows XP Professional, including additional capabilities to enable pen-based computing. This means that the Tablet PC runs all Windows XP applications with no modifications.

Powered with an efficient processor, Tablet PC is delivering the full power and functionality of today’s notebook computers and it promises to be a useful and versatile computing device using cutting-edge LCD screen technology. All Tablet PCs will have keyboards, some permanently attached and others detachable.

“Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is designed for today’s mobile information workers – corridor and road warriors who routinely find themselves in meetings or who spend the majority of their time away from their corporate office,” said Erik Moll, senior product manager, Tablet PC, Microsoft Canada. “This powerful new technology has the potential to significantly increase productivity.”

The real value of the Tablet PC is that it redefines mobility by making it possible for information workers to bring the power of their business computer into more places than ever before, with the same software they use on their office computer or notebook today.

Windows XP Tablet PC Edition also enables users to interact with their PC in more natural ways by writing directly on the screen using a digital pen, in addition to using a traditional keyboard and mouse. This capability enables new uses for the PC such as taking natural looking handwritten notes with digital ink, using the new Windows Journal Utility.

Users also can search handwritten notes using keywords. In addition, they can use the Tablet PC to edit documents electronically.

Hardware manufacturers who will ship Tablet PC models in the fall include: Acer Canada, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard Canada, NEC, Toshiba Canada and ViewSonic Canada.
