Suspected Al-Qaida Member Blows Himself Up In Yemen

YEMEN (voa) – A suspected al-Qaida member has blown himself up in Yemen after being cornered by Yemeni security forces.

The man identified as 25-year-old Samir al-Hada was being chased by security forces in a suburb of the capital, Sanaa, late Wednesday when a hand grenade in his hand blew up, killing him instantly. There were no other casualties.

Police are quoted as saying the suspect had recently visited Afghanistan to receive terrorist training and was involved in unspecified terrorist attacks.

The incident comes two days after the FBI issued a terrorist warning related to Yemen. It said up to 17 men believed led by a Yemeni national were possibly planning an attack in the United States, or against U.S. interests in Yemen. Mr. Hada was not on that list.

The FBI warning identified the possible ringleader as Fawaz Yahya al-Rabeei, a Yemeni citizen born in 1979 in Saudi Arabia.

For several weeks Yemen’s security forces have been looking for a number of fugitive Islamic militants with links to the al-Qaida terrorist organization.
