OTTAWA – Shawn Brant, a Mohawk and member of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, said he has received the support of some Mohawks on the reserve to organize the April 19 demonstration against next month’s Summit of the Americas, but not necessarily that of the band council.
The event would involve a convergence of activists in the middle of the bridge, also known as the Three Nations Bridge Crossing linking Canada and the U.S. near Cornwall, Ontario, each end is controlled by customs booths.
He emphasized that the action is not an effort to smuggle criminals across the border, but to raise awareness about the concerns of indigenous people with the summit and the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas.
