Suicide Bomber Kills 16 On Bus In Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (voa) – At least 14 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem. The blast peeled off the roof and blew out the sides of the bus as it pulled away from a bus stop near a busy intersection in southern Jerusalem.

Many of the dead and injured are believed to have been children on their way to school.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon made an unusual visit to the scene, condemning the attack and questioning the kind of state the Palestinians would create.

Mr. Sharon described the scene as evidence of a continuation of Palestinian terror and vowed to fight it.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat also condemned the bombing and said the Palestinian Authority rejects any Israeli attempts to blame them for the attack.

Police in Jerusalem have been on high alert since Monday after receiving warnings that five Palestinian suicide bombers were trying to infiltrate into Israel to carry out attacks.
