Spotify to allow artists to upload music to its streaming service

Thanks to this new initiative, artists will not have to go through a label or a digital aggregator to add their music to Spotify. Typically, it is the record labels that upload music directly to the streaming service. For the most part, artists that are not signed to a major record label have to pay a fee to a third-party service such as Tunecore to assist them in uploading their music to Spotify. As indicated by The Verge, this beta feature is still “invite-only.”

This upload feature will work within the existing “Spotify for Artists” platform, and it will let artists view their data about their listeners, and they can directly submit their musical content for playlist consideration. This will be a substantial benefit for independent artists since they can add their new tracks to Spotify in just a few clicks.

In addition, this new feature will allow artists to have more creative control over their music in advance of the release dates. Particularly impressive is the fact that direct upload is offered free of charge, and according to TechCrunch, it won’t deduct any commissions of its own. The artists can also choose when their tracks can go “live” on Spotify.
