Six Killed In Alberta Road Accident

RED EARTH CREEK, Alberta — An accident involving two pickup trucks and a propane tanker killed six people on a northern Alberta highway, police said Thursday.

The crash Wednesday night near Red Earth Creek, 180 miles north of Edmonton, as a pickup apparently veered into the oncoming lane, colliding with the other pickup and the tanker, said police spokesman James Derouin.

He said both pickups burst into flames, killing four people in one and two in the other. Two others were critically injured.

A woman in a passing vehicle rescued a 9-year-old child.

“She ran up to the vehicle that was on fire, smashed out a window and pulled out the youngest person in that vehicle, who was just a child, and saved their life,” Derouin said. “Unfortunately by the time she got back, the vehicle was too engulfed in flames to be able to save anybody else.

He said police were investigating if any of the drivers had been drinking alcohol.
