CES 2015 is still in full swing, and though tablets, TVs and smartphones are popular offerings, Shangai’s Sengled is whole-heartedly embracing the Internet of Things with its Snap lightbulb.
Snap, as Mashable explains, does a lot more than just light up a room. It has a built-in speaker, security camera and microphone. With those tools it offers motion detection and video recording, as well as facial recognition. All of its features can be controlled via a smartphone app.
The facial recognition can be especially handy, as the light bulb could help identify if there’s an intruder in the home. The bulb’s motion detector can also work in conjunction with the camera and microphone to record, should the motion detector activate.
The Snap, like any other bulb, will eventually burn out — Sengled says it should last for 25,000 hours. The bulb can plug into any existing outlet and can be controlled with an iOS or Android app.
All the extra features won’t come cheap, though — the bulb will go on sale sometime later this year and will cost $199.99.
If that’s a bit too much for you, there are some comparatively cheaper models the company has already released. The $169.99 Pulse features powerful JBL multi-channel stereo wireless speakers for convenient music streaming. For $59.99, there’s the Solo which has two 3-watt speakers. And for $49.99 there’s the Boost, which Sangled calls “the world’s first Wi-Fi-extending LED bulb.”
