Sanyo Canada to Launch Internet Radio Device on Monday

Sanyo Canada will unveil its own Internet radio device on Monday, DigitalJournal.com has learned. The out-of-the-box device allows customers to listen to stations worldwide without a subscription fee, unlike satellite radio technology.

Digital Journal — Internet radio fans in Canada will soon be able to listen to music and news from around the world using a standalone device.

DigitalJournal.com has learned Sanyo Canada will announce the availability of their first Internet radio product, an out-of-the-box unit that doesn’t require a computer hook-up, next week.

Syncing with any broadband connection, the Internet radio device offers thousands of stations and podcasts, no subscription fee required. The unit, priced at $200, will be available at the end of October.

The compact unit comes complete with a remote control, input for MP3/WMA players, an illuminated LCD display, 90 mm diameter stereo speakers and a port for extended bass response.

You can also search radio stations by country or genre.

Sanyo Canada’s device comes on the heels of another related announcement: the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is planning to review its policy of allowing unregulated distribution of broadcast media content over the Internet, which includes Internet radio programming. The CRTC’s public hearings on the issue will begin Feb. 17, 2009.
