Samsung Regains Spot as No. 1 Flat-Panel TV Company

After losing the leader position in flat-panel TV sales to Vizio last quarter, Samsung regained the lead this quarter by capturing 11.8 per cent of market share. Rounding out the top four is Vizio at second, followed by Sharp and Sony.

Digital Journal — The reputable leader is back at the No. 1 spot: Samsung is in top position in flat-panel TV shipments this quarter, with almost 12 per cent of the total market, according to DisplaySearch. Vizio, the market leader last quarter, dropped to No. 2 with 10.2 per cent market share, while Sharp captured 10 per cent and Sony nabbed 8.6 per cent.

CNet says Samsung enjoyed increased shipments because of its strong foothold in its LCD and plasma displays. CNet quotes DisplaySearch president Ross Young as saying:
Samsung also sells more TVs with 1080p resolution, a category that’s becoming very popular and more affordable… Vizio is more heavily invested in 720p.The report also offers some industry-wide statistics, according to Reuters: LCD TVs comprised 88 per cent of flat panel TV sales in the third quarter. And shipments of plasma TVs for the same quarter fell 17 per cent.

For the coming holiday season, the DisplaySearch report also offered some tips on the for home-entertainment consumers. The best deals will come from Sharp in LCD sets between 19 and 26 inches, Vizio in the 32- and 37-inch categories, and on TVs from most brands between 32 and 42 inches.
