GUANTANAMO (voa) – Friday, a team from the International Red Cross is set to begin interviewing some of the 110 Taleban and al-Qaida detainees held at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The Red Cross says its four-member delegation, which includes a physician, will remain at the base for several days to conduct the interviews and inspect prisoner living conditions.
Some human rights groups say the temporary prison facility falls below minimum standards for humane treatment. U.S. authorities insist conditions do not violate prisoner rights.
A fourth group of war prisoners arrived at the base Thursday amid tight security. A Marine general at the base says several of the detainees have publicly stated their intent to kill an American before they leave the naval base.
Meanwhile in Afghanistan, U.S. Defense officials say three Marines were injured Thursday when an unknown item exploded as they were burning trash at their camp in Kandahar. Officials say the injuries are not life-threatening.
Also Thursday near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif, the United Nations said gunmen wearing military uniforms hijacked two World Food Program trucks carrying 20 tons of wheat each. Just last week, the U.N. food agency had said local warlords are a threat to the distribution of aid.
