MEXICO CITY – Mexican officials say President Vicente Fox will travel to the United States in coming days to reaffirm his support for the U.S. led international fight against terrorism. The announcement came Tuesday as Mexican officials were finalizing details of the trip to Washington. Following the September 11 attacks, the Mexican president pledged unconditional support to the United States.
Mr. Fox also promised to work closely with U.S. authorities to ensure security along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Critics in Mexico and elsewhere have accused President Fox of failing to make a stronger statement of support for his northern neighbor following the attacks. Some say his condolences to America were undercut by remarks made by Interior Minister Santiago Creel who has emphasized Mexico’s traditional policy of non-involvement in foreign disputes.
Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda issued a call for solidarity, but members of Congress subsequently asked for his resignation, and condemned any policy that would plunge Mexico into war.
The attacks occurred four days after Mr. Fox ended a state visit to the United States.
