VLADIVOSTOK (voa) – The Russian military is warning that any more cut-offs of electricity to a crucial space communications base could have catastrophic consequences.
The power company that provides power to the the communications base in Russia’s far east say it has failed to pay its bill. Power to the base was cut off briefly over the last few days.
Military officials say cutting off power endangers a multi-million dollar surveillance satellite and could cause an interruption of communications with astronauts on the International Space Station.
Top Russian military commanders rushed to the base near Vladivostok on the Kamchatka Peninsula to try to resolve the problem to prevent any more power cut-offs.
Last week, another local energy company cut off power to some navy and air force sites. Russia’s Far East hosts a number of important military installations and is home to the country’s Pacific Fleet.
